When planning your magical vacation to Walt Disney World, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of rides, characters, and Mickey-shaped treats. But there's one formidable foe that can quickly turn your dream trip into a sweaty nightmare: the Florida heat.
And now, it’s officially summer in the northern hemisphere. Fear not, intrepid Disney adventurer! With these tips, you'll be well-equipped to tackle the sunshine state's sweltering temperatures and make the most of your time in the happiest place on earth.
1. Dress for Success
Leave the jeans and dark colors at home. Opt for light-colored, loose-fitting clothes made from breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials. Don't forget a hat or visor to shield your face from the sun, and bring sunglasses to protect your eyes.
At the parks they sell cooling towels that really help a lot with the heat. Something I recommend is getting cooling towels in advance on Amazon, the prices are better and the quality is as good as the ones in the parks.
2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
This cannot be stressed enough. Bring a refillable water bottle and take advantage of the free ice water available at quick-service restaurants throughout the parks. Set reminders on your phone if needed – staying hydrated is crucial in preventing heat exhaustion.
Pro Tip: In this blog post, you’ll find my favorite recommendation for a water bottle with a filter that I always bring on my trips.
3. Plan Your Day Strategically
Start early to enjoy cooler morning temperatures. Hit the outdoor attractions first and save indoor rides and shows for the hottest part of the day (usually between 1 pm and 4 pm). If you’re staying on Disney property, it’s super easy to take a midday break and return to your hotel for a swim or nap.
4. Embrace the Water
Pack a small spray bottle or cooling towel to mist yourself throughout the day. Don't shy away from water rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (opening on June 28th) at Magic Kingdom or Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom – they're a great way to cool off. If you're really feeling the heat, hop over to one of Disney's water parks for a refreshing change of pace.
5. Seek Out Air Conditioning
Disney World is full of air-conditioned havens. Duck into shops, visit indoor attractions, or enjoy a leisurely meal in a cool restaurant when you need a break from the sun. The Hall of Presidents in Magic Kingdom and the American Adventure in Epcot are great places for an extended, air-conditioned rest.
When I make reservations at Table Service restaurants for my clients (and for myself), I always receive the feedback that they have a less stressful day. An example is having lunch at Skipper Canteen at Magic Kingdom. The food is incredible and the ambiance of the restaurant is so cool and relaxing! That sit down break in the middle of the day in an air conditioned room is essential to recharge and get ready to have more fun!
6. Snack Smart
Opt for cooling treats like frozen lemonade, Mickey ice cream bars, or the iconic Pineapple Dole Whip. These not only taste great but can help lower your body temperature. Avoid excessive alcohol (especially when visiting EPCOT!) and caffeine, as these can contribute to dehydration.
7. Use Sunscreen Religiously
Apply a high-SPF sunscreen before you leave your hotel and reapply every two hours (more if you're sweating a lot or enjoying water attractions). Sunburn can sneak up on you and ruin your vacation faster than you can say "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo."
8. Take Advantage of Disney Transportation
Another incredible perk of staying on property is Disney's complimentary transportation options. Whether it's a bus, boat, monorail, or the new Skyliner, these methods of transportation are air-conditioned (or at least shaded) and give you a chance to rest and cool down between destinations.
9. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Be aware of symptoms like dizziness, headache, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. If you or a family member start experiencing these, find a cool place to rest immediately and seek help if symptoms persist. Something I always tell my clients is where each First Aid office is in each park. This way, if they ever need help, they know exactly where to go.
10. Embrace the Pools
End your park day with a refreshing dip in your hotel pool. Not only is it a great way to cool off, but it's also a fun and relaxing way to wind down after a busy day of Disney magic.
11. Invest in Genie+
Disney’s Skip-The-Line Service has always been really controversial, ever since we kissed Fast Passes goodbye before the 2020 closures. But we can agree that it is a very convenient service, that not only saves us hours in the parks, but also saves us from having to stand in lines under that hot Florida sun — especially if you’re in Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios! I highly recommend investing in Genie+, if you can. As your Travel Advisor, I’ll give you all the tips and tricks on how to use and navigate the system, for an even better day at Walt Disney World!
Remember, surviving the Florida heat is all about preparation and smart choices. By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to a cool, comfortable, and truly magical Walt Disney World experience. So grab your mouse ears, slather on that sunscreen, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime – without letting the heat melt away your Disney dreams!
